Overview

This new Studies of Global Asia (SGA) minor is a flexible interdisciplinary program drawing on courses across the Illinois State campus, including several Colleges. Students may only apply nine credit hours from their major to this minor, encouraging broader academic exploration. The SGA minor examines Asia and global Asian diasporas through history, culture, politics, and social systems. It emphasizes transnationalism, migration, and racial formation, addressing issues such as Islamophobia and anti-Asian racism through an intersectional, social justice lens.

Point of Pride

The minor's strong interdisciplinary structure draws from eight academic programs, giving students unusual flexibility to tailor the minor to their interests while gaining a cohesive, globally focused education.

Why study Studies of Global Asia?

Students will engage in discussions, research, and community-focused learning, using greater Asia and its populations and cultures as case studies. They will develop critical thinking skills, increased fluency in cross-cultural communication (with applications in many areas, including business), analytical skills, and increased employment opportunities. Professionally, the courses in the SGA minor support careers in international affairs, education, public policy, business, media, and social services. Employers value graduates with global awareness and cultural competency. The minor also prepares students for interdisciplinary graduate study and helps them navigate an increasingly diverse global environment with informed perspectives and practical skills.
